INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING: Much of the mystery of psychotherapy is summed up in the ability of the therapist to develop an open and honest relationship with their client. Once that relationship is established, clients are able to make rapid changes in how they react to life’s challenges. Focusing on an individuals negative thoughts, and how these thoughts affect their feelings and behaviors leads to lifelong changes in how they live their lives.
MARRIAGE/COUPLES: Relationships sometimes need an objective third party to assist in creating a safe environment for honest communication. Although couples tend to arrive in crisis mode, once the crisis is resolved, counseling becomes an opportunity for deepening their relationship with each other and with the world. Couples that are willing to make changes in the way they treat each other and themselves find that this work also improves how they experience the other relationships in their lives.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE/ADDICTION: I know that making the decision to address a substance problem takes incredible courage. Being aware that it is a problem is easy, but deciding to let go of your best friend, sometimes your only friend, is frightening. Admitting to family and friends that you have a problem is humiliating, particularly if you have been good at hiding it. However, there comes a time when you know you have two choices. Seek help or continue to watch your life and physical body slowly deteriorate. My honest, yet non-judgmental/non-confrontational approach will allow you a safe place to begin your journey.
GRIEF/LOSS: Experiencing a stress reaction as a result of grief and loss can have lasting effects on your relationships and your health. Addressing these issues with honesty and an open heart will enhance your life, and allow you the growth experience from life’s challenges. Loss is a part of life, be it the death of a loved one, loss of a job or position, loss of a relationship, or of a physical ability, and being able to share with a counselor can assist with acceptance and with moving toward the future.
ANGER MANAGEMENT: Learning how to manage your anger can have huge benefits to your health and your relationships. The inability to manage anger, lowers self-esteem and increases feelings of helplessness. In a clear and straightforward approach, I will assist you in identifying the underlying thoughts and feelings behind your anger, and provide education and skills for managing your behaviors.
DEPRESSION: When depression takes control of your life, it feels hopeless to make any effort to change, and many of us use substances to mask the pain and anxiety we feel. Asking for help, sharing your story, and being in connection with another can all assist you in breaking the cycle of pain. My approach is to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for individuals to examine their thoughts and feelings, and to empower them to make behavioral changes that will lead to recovery.
ANXIETY/STRESS: Stress is now built into daily life, and the pressure and anxiety that builds up over time can be debilitating both emotionally and physically. Managing stress is an ongoing process, and when life issues become overwhelming, sometimes the activities that worked in the past are no longer effective. My approach is to assist clients in becoming more mindful of the present moment, while working on the underlying thoughts and feelings fueling their anxiety.
